John dunn for Manatee county commissioner-District 1

I’m Not a Politician—I’m Your Neighbor

I’m not backed by big developers or special interests. I am a local. I am a Christian, husband, and father.

I am a former first responder, and U.S. Air Force veteran, who is tired of seeing our beautiful home traded away. I’m asking for your vote because I want to ensure that when our children grow up, they still recognize the home we love.

Mission

Strengthen our voice!:

Create a Manatee County Charter. Prioritize accountability, transparency, and district consent.

Public Health and safety first:

Protect FDAB, stop overdevelopment, ensure infrastructure & emergency services can support population. Address flooding, oppose harmful mining, protect our water and land.

Non-Charter vs Charter

It’s time for a county charter that answers to the people, not the other way around.

Accountability. Transparency. Consent of the people.
District consent amendments that require referendums before major decisions are made.

Give power back where it belongs: the people.

More INFO

Over-Development

  • Future Development Area Boundary (FDAB) to keep our rural lands rural and stop suburban sprawl from swallowing Myakka and Duette.
  • Infrastructure First: The roads, drainage, and emergency services need to be in place to support the community.
  • Respect: our local character rather than developer-driven

Flooding & Storm Preparedness

  • Treating the Cause: Recognizing that over-development of our "natural sponges" (wetlands/pastures) is the primary driver of the recent catastrophic flooding.

  • Flood-Resilient Planning: Prioritize "triage" for flood-prone areas like the Manatee River and Myakka basins before the next storm hits.

Phosphate Mining & Environmental Health

  • Ground Zero: Duette resident, I am personally invested in the safety of our air and soil near the mines.
  • Ending "Rubber Stamp" Extensions: Opposing the constant shifting of  deadlines that leave our land in limbo for decades.
  • Protecting the Aquifer: Ensuring our drinking water is shielded from the risks of strip-mining

Coastal Water Preservation

  • Protect Water Quality: Reduce pollution, strengthen wastewater and runoff controls, and invest in infrastructure to prevent red tide and algae blooms.
  • Responsible Coastal preservation: Protect wetlands and mangroves, and ensure infrastructure keeps pace to preserve our waterways.

Animal Shelters

  • Subject Matter Experts: Include veterinarians, rescue groups, and trainers to guide policy with real-world experience in animal health, behavior, and placement.
  • Annex Shelters: Create strategically located intake centers with trained staff to assess each animal’s needs and direct them to appropriate outcomes.
